Albert Ramos, la modestia también sirve / Albert Ramos, modest also is good

Al acabar el partido de dobles de Martín/Boje en Reus, cogí el coche a toda prisa para irme al Godó, en Barcelona. Había quedado con los de Wilson y para tomar algo Con Nacho, que entrena allí. Ya de camino recibí un mensaje en la BlackBerry, era Garrapiz, promesa española que actualmente estudia y compite en EEUU: “increíble, Ramos está ganando a González”. Cuando llegué al Godó avisé a Nacho, pero él ya estaba allí: “vente inmediatamente a la pista uno, Albert está ganado 3 - 0 a González en el 3º set”. Retrasé la reunión y me dirigí enseguida a la “bombonera” del R.C.T. Barcelona.

La pista 1 del Godó es una ratonera para las figuras y el escenario ideal para los jugadores modestos de casa como Albert, donde estaba arropado por 2.000 aficionados que vibraban como si de la Copa Davis se tratase. La mayoría estaba volcada con el mataronés de 22 años que desde niño juega en los equipos del R.C.T.B. También había un grupito de chilenos, que se hacía sentir en su apoyo al favorito, Fernando González.

El pequeño se comió al grande, el 161 del ranking, procedente de la previa, tumbó al duodécimo tenista mundial y semifinalista de la competición en 2009. Albert Ramos vivió su gran día. Se le escaparon dos 'match-balls' en la segunda manga, pero no desaprovechó la oportunidad en la tercera.
Casi en trance, alucinaba ante un carrusel de micrófonos. En el vestuario vuelve a ser felicitado por su entrenador, José María Díaz. "¿Qué hago? ¿Como algo? ¿Estiro?". "Lo que tú veas", le dice el técnico. Una ducha rápida, y a jugar un choque de dobles.
"Es un sueño, no me lo creo. He tenido la suerte de hacer el mejor tenis de mi vida esta semana", comenta Albert, que en sus tres participaciones anteriores se había quedado en la fase previa.
En su ficha del ATP Tour ni siquiera sale su imagen. Sus grandes logros fueron tres victorias en ITF y dos finales de Challenger en 2009. Esta antigua promesa del tenis español casi se queda en el camino, pero ahora se siente de nuevo jugador. "De alevín e infantil siempre estaba entre los tres mejores de España", recuerda Díaz, que juguetea con su hijo Hugo, el único que mantiene la calma ajeno a lo que está pasando".
Ramos pasó por las federaciones catalana y española, también por la academia de Roig, Vilaró y Margets. Pero no acababa de despegar, se marchó a puesto 700 del mundo. "El paso a sénior le resultó muy complicado porque su físico no era fuerte y no podía demostrar el talento y carácter que mostraba de pequeño. Ahora todo esto ha cambiado", explica Díaz.
Este oscense reconoce que "yo no soy un entrenador preparado a nivel de cursos, pero con su ilusión y la mía nos fuimos formando conjuntamente". Y aquel niño volvió después a él. "Hace tres años vino a mi casa y me dijo que lo dejaba. Colgó la raqueta unos días, pero pocos porque le convencí. Yo no era conocedor del circuito, no tenía medios para viajar continuamente, pero tenía claro que lo metía más arriba por huevos".
Díaz, director de la Escuela del CT Mataró, y el preparador físico Jordi Vilà se pusieron manos a la obra. "Le hemos dado confianza, con mucho cariño y sin apretar, para que se sintiera como cuando era niño". El técnico explica que "yo no gano nada porque no tenemos medios. A través de un conocido conseguí que la empresa IMF Formación de Madrid nos diera 6.000 euros. Albert va cubriendo gastos jugando en la Bundesliga o por equipos". Las ganancias de Ramos en profesionales son de 74.011 dólares (unos 55.000 euros). En el Godó, de momento, ya se ha asegurado 19.000 euros.
Ramos rebusca en su bolsa, y no encuentra nada. "¿Me dejas tus pantalones?". José María se los quita y se los da para que dispute el dobles. "¿Ves cómo estamos?", señala el técnico

Bonita historia que pude presenciar en directo junto a Nacho Coll Former Payer Passion Talent Group, jugador también modesto que seguro que al igual que Ramos y que José Díaz soñaban, sueña al igual que yo que algún día se convierta su historia en realidad.

A Albert le conozco desde hace años. Presencié cómo se vivían en los años 2004/2005 los derbis entre él y la otra promesa catalana de la misma edad, Pere Riba. Eran partidos de más de tres horas, como el vivido en una ocasión en el Future de Lleida. Fue rival de mis jugadores en más de una ocasión, precisamente, Nacho Coll le ganó en semifinales del Campeonato de España Júnior en el 2005, Alicante. Conozco la manera de pensar de su padre, respecto profundamente su manera de vivir este deporte mientras es uno amateur (le queda menos para dejar de serlo), sin perder la realidad en ningún momento, sin abandonar sus estudios universitarios, los que los compagina con eternos viajes y entrenos, alternando semanas con su coach José y otras sólo, al ser económicamente inviable.

En el restaurante de jugadores del Open de Australia de este año, Albert y yo hemos compartido bonitas y productivas tertulias. Él estaba sólo y yo con James Ward, jugador inglés al que le gusta la tranquilidad, los espacios y compartir momentos con sus compatriotas.

Casi forzosamente acabábamos los dos, Albert y yo en una mesa o, cuando el calor australiano lo permitía, ojeando partidos y hablando en profundidad de tenis: su estructuración, las dificultades, soluciones, ideas, listas, calendarios, federaciones, jugadores, etc. Me alegro por él y seguro que aunque con este paso avanzado esta semana seguirá opinando igual y con más peso que como opinábamos y coincidíamos los dos en enero.

A José Díaz, su Coach, también le quiero felicitar. No le conozco en profundidad, pero sé que tiene esta ilusión y esta llama encendida que un entrenador de competición debe mantener siempre.

Tanto José como Albert, en un momento “jodido” de lesión de uno de mis jugadores, se portaron como caballeros y nos gestionaron una visita a un especialista que ellos conocen como si de ellos mismo se tratase.

Coincidí con José en el Challenger de Sevilla, en una difícil semana para mí, que creo que únicamente coaches como él pueden entender. Se trataba de la primera semana, después de muchos años, que me encontraba trabajando sin uno de los jugadores con los que había estado currando a destajo. Sus consejos “este tiempo te puede venir bien Toni, a veces esto sirve para recuperar las perspectivas, esto a mi me pasó durante un tiempo con Albert, ánimos” me alentaron estas palabras, Enhorabuena José y gracias.

En Reus, Future ATP de 10.000$, he estado trabajando con el Institucional Player Passion Talent Group, Pablo Martin. Ha realizado una excelente semana mostrando un alto nivel de juego a pesar de perder en octavos con Capkovic 6/7 6/2 2/6. Ganó el dobles con su partner habitual y Former Player Passion Talent Group Agustín Boje, ganando a la final a Santos-Marse 7/6 6/3, Enhorabuena! y acabando así la semana, que siempre ayuda y refuerza mucho para el siguiente Future, que ya estamos preparando en Vic.

En Reus coincidí con Andoni Vivanco y Javier Martí, también dos Former Players Passion Talent Group que están luchando para superar todas las adversidades que este mundo te hace afrontar. A Andoni le acompañan los resultados esta semana, de momento está en la final. ¡Ánimos y suerte! Y Javi desplegando cada vez más un nivel de juego más alto con adversarios más duros y experimentados. Aunque en esta ocasión el resultado final no le acompañase, cada vez está más cerca, a por todas Javi.

Como nota negativa, el comportamiento de algunos jugadores que hacen más difícil que los organizadores se planteen reforzar y aumentar la categoría de estos torneos, así como conseguir que se les respete como se merecen. ¡5 bolas fuera de la pista a propósito en un mismo día no conduce a nada bueno!

Ya tenemos final para el Master ATP 500 Conde Godo 2010, nada más y nada menos que dos Barones consolidados cada vez más dentro de los top ten Verdasco y Soderling. A ver cual de los dos aprovechará las ausenciaa del Emperador, Rey y Príncipes de este Godo que afortunadamente el año que viene ya deja de ubicarse entre dos Masters ATP 1000 como Montecarlo y Roma.

And I postponed the meeting and I went to the "bombonera" of RCT Barcelona (Real Club de Tennis of Barcelona).

Godo’s court 1 is a mousehole for figures and an ideal setting for modest players from our country like Albert, who is encouraged by 2,000 fans that are quivering as if it was the Davis Cup. Most of them were supporting him, who was born in Mataró (Barcelona) and he’s 22 years old. Since he was a little boy, he’s playing in the teams of R.C.T.B. There was also a small group of Chileans, who were supporting the favourite, felt in their support for the favourite, Fernando González.

This senior Spanish tennis up-and-coming talent almost ran out of this sport, but now he feels a new player. Díaz says that he was always in the top three in young categories of Spain and Hugo, hi son, is the only one who keeps the calm beyond the situation. Ramos played for the Catalan and Spanish federations and also for the academy of Roig, Vilaró and Margets. But he fall asleep in this sport and he got the ranking of 700 of the world. This man from Huesca admits that he is not a coach ready to train level courses, but our enthusiasm we were training together. But three years ago, he came to my house and told me that he wanted to give up this sport. He pulled out of tennis for a few days, but only for a few days, because I convinced him. I wasn’t familiar with the circuit, I hadn’t any means to travel, but I only knew that this boy could reach to the top.
Díaz, manager of the School of CT Mataró, and Jordi Vilà, fitness coach made shoulders to the wheels. They said that we gave him confidence with love and without putting pressure in order to feel like he was a child. The trainer explains that he doesn’t win anything, because we don’t have any means. Through a familiar person, I got 6,000 euros thanks to the Madrid Formation IMF. Albert is covering some expenses, because he’s playing in the Bundesliga team or in teams. Capital gains of Ramos in professional category are $74,011 (about 55,000 euros). In Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell Godó, right now, he has already 19,000 euros.Ramos searches in her purse and he found nothing. And he says to José María "Can I borrow your pants?” José María takes them off and gives them, because he has to play the doubles. The coach says: "Why we are like that?”..

This is a nice story that I attended with Nacho Coll, also a modest player. I know that Ramos and José Díaz are dreaming that one day it becomes true.

I know Albert for years. I witnessed how they lived the derbies between him and the other Catalan up-and-coming talent of the same age, Pere Riba in the year 2004/2005. The matches were more than three hours, as once happened in the Future of Lleida (Catalonia). Nacho Coll was a rival for my players in more than one occasion and he won the semifinals of the Junior Championship of Spain in 2005, in Alicante. I know the thinking of his father and I deeply respect their way of life of this sport while he’s son is playing an amateur sport, but in a few time he’s going to leave it. But he will make it without losing the reality at any time, without giving up his studies which combines with the long trips and trainings, and also combining weeks with his coach José and others himself, because are unviable economically.

When we were in the player’s restaurant of Australian Open this year, I have shared with some enjoyable and productive gatherings. He was alone and I was with James Ward, an English player who likes peace, the spaces and also sharing experiences with their compatriots.

We ended, Albert and I, on a table or, when the heat wasn’t extremely strong, we were watching matches and we were talking about tennis: its structure, difficulties, solutions, ideas, lists, calendars, federations, players, etc. I'm happy for him and I know that with this new step of this week, he will think the same as we thought and agreed in January.

I also want to congratulate Jose Diaz, his coach. I don’t know him really good, but I know that he has this hope and he has to keep always this hope.

Both Joseph and Albert, in a “tricky” moment of the injury of one of my players, they behaved like gentlemen and they arranged us a visit to a specialist that they know if they were one of them.

In another occasion, I met with José in the Challenger of Sevilla. It was a difficult week for me and I think that only coaches like him can understand it. It was the first week, after many years, that I was working without one player with whom I had been working a lot. He said some advices: "This time will be good for you, Toni. This is good sometimes for regaining the outlook. It happened to me one time with Albert. So, cheer up”. Congratulations José and thank you.

In Reus, Future ATP of $10,000, I have been working with the Institutional Player Passion Talent Group, Pablo Martin. As a negative fact, it is the behavior of some players, because they make more difficult for organizers to think about strengthing and raising the category of these tournaments. Also they want to be respected as they deserve. 5 balls out of the court on purpose in one day don’t lead to anything good!
