La sociedad evoluciona hacia la igualdad. En el tenis hace unos 25 años hubo una revolución gracias a ella hoy en día todo el mundo puede jugar a tenis. Ahora bien, ésta no llego a la competición. El proceso para intentar ser un profesional sigue estando sólo al abastecer de unos privilegiados y esto no va camino de cambiar si no más bien lo contrario. Hay que reimaginar el tenis!

La competición internacional previa a los torneos controlados por la ATP y la WTA pertenece a la ITF. Ella se apoya en las Federaciones nacionales ayudándoles en la parte organizativa. La ITF es la entidad recaudatoria. En principio, uno de sus objetivos es la reinversión en estos torneos sin embargo, los protagonistas no sólo no lo perciben si no mas bien todo lo contrario ya que la presión económica es cada vez mayor y la capacidad de generar recursos en la propia competición es cada vez menor.

El organizar o jugar hoy en día estos torneos es económicamente inviable. Lo que cuesta el jugarlos es insostenible y las obligaciones a las que están sometidos los organizadores también. La solvencia de estos torneos recae de cada vez mas sobre los jugadores y los organizadores. Y, profundizando más, al final la posibilidad de jugar está directamente relacionada a la capacidad económica de los familiares de los jugadores, lo que nos dirige hacia la desigualdad. Esta no es la dirección que deseamos sino todo lo contrario: hay que reimaginar el tenis para que todos tengan las mismas oportunidades por ello hay que aliviar a los jugadores y a los organizadores. La competición hacia el profesionalismo de este deporte debe ser de cada vez más factible para todos y no sólo para unos pocos.

La ITF debe estar al servicio de los protagonistas. Se ha perdido este enfoque, pensamos que hay que redirigir esta dirección. Creemos que el tenis es un deporte de todos y por tanto, es clave que el bien común prime sobre el beneficio particular. Por todo ello nace #reimaginaeltenis, con la intención de realizar propuestas concretas de acción directa a los organismos competentes y así iniciar un cambio positivo. Seremos escuchados y tendremos relevancia si, entre todos, enviamos un mensaje común. Únete al movimiento y vamos a provocar el cambio.

Over the years society has kept evolving towards equality. About 25 years ago, there was a revolution within the tennis world. As a result, nowadays everyone can play tennis. The process of becoming a professional tennis player is only available for a few people who are able to afford all the expenses involved in this period of time. The worst part is that this is not changing but getting worse year after year. We have to reinvent tennis.

The smaller professional tennis circuit belongs to the ITF (International Tennis Federation). The ITF and different national federations organize these tournaments. The ITF is the tax collection agency. On paper, one of their goals is to reinvest their profits into these tournaments; however players do not receive any benefits. The cost of living has gone up dramatically over the past 25 years and they still earn the same prize money as before.

Organizing or playing these tournaments is not economically feasible. The amount of money needed to play them as well as the requirements to organize them is immense. The viability of these tournaments is increasingly falling on players and sponsors. The possibility of playing these tournaments clearly depends on the financial situation of the players’ families. This leads to inequality. Obviously, this is not the path that we want to follow but the opposite; we have to reinvent tennis so everyone has the same opportunities. In order to do that, we have to relieve players and sponsors financially. As the first stage of professional tennis, the ITF pro circuit must be affordable for everyone and not only for a few individuals.

The ITF’s main mission should be promoting the well-being of the players. This is something that has been forgotten and that players think must be changed. We truly believe that tennis is a sport made for everyone and therefore, it is key that the greater good prevails over individuals’ enrichment. In conclusion, the main reason why reinventing tennis is born is to present different proposals to the institutions in charge and together make a positive change.
