Rafael Nadal: ¡Increíble lo conseguido estos años!

Este año tuve la posibilidad de visitar por primera vez el Open de Australia. Llevaba desde mediados de Noviembre trabajando “full time” con el jugador inglés James Ward (250 ATP) y empezamos el año en el ATP de Chenai, siguiendo en la previa del Open de Australia.

Me apetecía, la verdad, después de tantos años de seguirlo durante la madrugada, (hora española), combinándolo durante el día con el primer circuito satélite del año que se disputaba en Cala Ratjada (Mallorca). Siempre satisfechos de los resultados de nuestro primer embajador australiano, Charly Moyà, con su “hasta luego Lucas” del 97 y, más adelante, coincidiendo con los primeros Futures del año, también en casa: Ciutadella y Cala Millor. Como no, más satisfechos aún si cabe con los resultados del manacorí Rafael Nadal.

La expectativa creada por llegar al Central Park de Melburne no era para menos. Las instalaciones son increíbles. Al entrar hay un pasillo muy extenso con una foto de Rafael Nadal tumbado en el suelo después de vencer el año pasado en la extenuante final a Federer 7/5 3/6 7/6 3/6 6/2. Este pasillo y mi primera visita a la pista Rod Laver Arena bombardearon mi mente de imágenes y de pensamientos de aquella gran final sobre las sensaciones que se vivieron en esta central un año atrás.

Mi apuesta inicial como vencedor del Open de Australia 2010 siempre la barajé entre Andy Murray, con el que había coincidido en el Master de Londres y en la LTA, trabajando muy duro a buen nivel, y Rafael Nadal, de quien sabemos que siempre va darlo todo.

Tengo que reconocer que a Federer no le veía ganador ni de Australia ni de ningún Grand Slam más (exceptuando Wimbledon, donde dependen muchos más factores).

A medida que iban avanzando las semanas del Open, ya no digo de la mismísima final, fui entendiendo mi espejismo mental de descartar tan rápido, de lo más alto del podium, a Federer, el mejor jugador de todos los tiempos (dicho una y otra vez por los jugadores actuales y retirados).

El culpable de este espejismo de infravalorar y menospreciar la capacidad que tiene Roger Federer para este deporte era Rafael Nadal y sus 6 Grand Slams en su cosecha con tan solo 22 años, ya no hablemos por arrebatarle el número uno durante casi un año o por desbancarle de su hegemonía en hierba (aunque fuese a la tercera) o por acabar haciéndole llorar de impotencia al derrotarle sobre la pista dura Australiana.

La superioridad con la que Federer venció en este último Open de Australia me recuperó de la inconsciencia en la que me había metido. ¡Ah! Y por supuesto multiplicar el valor de lo conseguido hasta el día de hoy por Rafael Nadal, que no es poco, y más aun al coincidir con la plenitud deportiva de este ser casi perfecto llamado Federer.

El espectáculo está servido y durante estos días lo viviremos en Indian Wells. El Rey recuperado del esfuerzo de destronar al Emperador, el Emperador con confianza y los príncipes herederos junto con los barones cada vez más preparados para dar lo mejor de sí en las batallas finales.

Rafael Nadal: “It’s unbelievable what I’ve achieved these years!”

I had the chance this year to visit for the first time the Australian Open. Since mid-November, I was working all the day long with the English player, James Ward (250 in the ATP ranking). We began the year in the Chennai ATP and later at the Australian Open Preliminary.
I really wanted to work with him, because I had followed him many years during the dawn (Spanish time). And during the day I’ve combined this with the first satellite circuit of the year that was played in Cala Ratjada (Mallorca).

We were pleased with the results of our first Australian ambassador, Charly Moyà, with the phrase that said in the year 97 “see you later alligator”. Later we went to the first matches in Ciutadella and Cala Millor (Mallorca). And we were also pleased with the results of Rafael Nadal.

I wasn’t confused when I tried to think how will be the Central Park in Melbourne, because the sports facilities were incredible. When you enter, you find a long corridor with a photo of Rafael Nadal. He’s lying on the floor, because it represents the moment when he won last year the gruelling final against Federer with a results of 7/5 3/6 7/6 3/6 6/2. When I saw the corridor and the Rod Laver court, I remembered that great final because lots of feelings were in that place.

I only bet for two possible players for winning the Australian Open 2010. One was Andy Murray, who I met him in Tennis Masters in London and in the LTA, where we were working hard. And the second one was Rafael Nadal, because we know that he always gives everything. So, I have to recognise that I didn’t see Federer such as the winner of the Australian Open or in any Grand Slam, but he probably will win in Wimbledon where there are different considerations.
When weeks passed in Australian Open and I’m not talking about the end of the final, I began to understand my mental mirage. It said me to rule out quickly Federer from the podium, the best player of the world (this is said once and again for the current and retired players).

The guilty of this mental mind was Rafael Nadal, because he gave me reasons to underestimate Roger’s Federer ability that has for this sport. Rafael Nadal won six Grand Slams with only 22 years old. So he displaced the number one for almost one year, also in the grass court (even in the third time) and he made him cry for the powerlessness that he felt when he was beat in the hard court of Australia.

I was recovered from the thoughtlessness that I was submitted, because I saw that Federer didn’t lose his superiority and won the last Australian Open. Oh! And of course, I wasn’t wrong about what Rafael Nadal achieved until today. That has merit, because he has coincided with the peak of Federer’s career who is known as the perfect player.

Anyway, the show is ready and during these days we are going to live this experience in Indian Wells. We are going to see that the king is recovered from the effort to overthrow the emperor. Also the emperor with his confidence and crown princes with barons who are prepared every time to make their best in the final battles.
