Coach pregunta, jugador responde / Coach Interviews, Player Answers .

No me he dado ni cuenta…

Me encanta vivirlos.

Sergio Gutiérrez Ferrol “Guti” was born in Alicante in 1989. He is placed on the 250th position in the ATP ranking. He is right-handed and belongs to the Tarragona Tennis Club although he is working at the 40-15 Tennis Club. His coach and brother is Adolfo Gutiérrez.
Hi “Guti”. You are making great progress. Congratulations to you. I would like to thank you for your time with us in our blog. Tell us how you began your tennis career.
I am the youngest of three brothers, and the other two used to play tennis. Adolfo, the middle brother, bought a tennis racket as a gift for me when I was six. Adolfo is a coach; he loves tennis and he spends all day dreaming at his tennis club. He introduced me to this sport and he has been my coach ever since. Furthermore, my family built a tennis court at home. Meanwhile, my cousin, my parents, my uncle, my grandfather, they all used to coach me in their free time. I am quite anxious and I have spent many hours on that court.
How did you live the step from weekend club player to semi-pro and junior promising youth getting closer to professional tennis player?
I did not even realise… I like tennis more and more each time.
What or who has helped you the most and what have you missed or still miss?
My brother Adolfo is the person who has helped me with his support and coaching. He has taught me everything I know. What I miss is the economical support to face the big expenditure that tennis requires when someone wishes to become professional tennis player.
In your opinion, what have you improved the most the last few years?
I think I have improved the mental aspect. However, I still have a lot to improve and learn in every aspect including the mental one. I believe that dealing with people with experience and aspirations like you, is a good choice and it also helps.
What advice would you give to the players that are following some of your steps?
I would suggest them to listen to the piece of advice they give to them. Furthermore, to be able to distinguish between good ones and those followed by some interest. They should also be able to analyze and use them, although this means a huge sacrifice
.
Which players have been references for you?
Rafa Nadal is one of those. However he is not a reference in a hundred per cent. It is very difficult to establish a comparison. Rafa is one-of-a-kind. I think that we can always find something good from things or people.
What characteristics do you most value in a coach?
I appreciate the ambition and aspiration; the fact that he makes you trust in yourself and, at the same time, he shows confidence to you. I appreciate the calmness to know that what he says is the best for you.
What is the most difficult situation for you as a high-performance player?
The hardest situation for me is the economical issue and the fact that my parents are working hard to help me.
How would you like to be seen by other people?
I would like to be seen as a happy man. I want people to understand that I have chosen the life I want and I am going to do my best.
The brilliant moments such as Spain’s Junior champion, a victory in your first Future at home, your first appearance in a Grand Slam... do they compensate all the sacrifice done since you were a child?
Yes, obviously.
In your opinion, what should be the most important changes in the ATP and ITF, responsible for the ATP points?
I think that the money the ITF gives to players is miserable. It is very difficult to play qualifying rounds. We invest a lot of money and we do not win anything at all. I have not taken part of many tournaments ruled by the ATP but it seems like they are doing well. In any case I am sure that it could also be improved. This year, I could not play the Australian Open qualifiers because it was too expensive for me. In my opinion, this damage should be fixed.
What do you think about the fact that the ATP does not allowed communication between player and coach in a match?
If they do it the same way as in the Davis Cup, it would great, that is the way they do in the WTA tour. However, it is not necessary; the time they give to them is not enough to do anything. This situation should become normal once for all
Have you ever thought about giving up tennis or what we use to say “hang up your racket”?
Yes, when I was 15 or 16 years old I used to do it each time I did not win a match haha. Once, when I was 16, I almost give up, and that would have been the biggest mistake ever. Since then I did not even think about it.
What do you like the most about tennis?
I enjoy the difficult situations. I love those. For example a third set tie-break; when playing finals as well, and winning those of course.
Thank you very much “Guti”, once again. You already know that I enjoy sharing this moment with tennis lovers like you. Feel free to use this blog when necessary. Big hug and keep on working hard!
